PROJECT DIRECTOR, TERIZ MICHAELTeriz Michael was born in Cairo, Egypt and moved to the U.S. as a child. She began her art training at the Visual Arts High School magnet program in New Jersey and went on to receive a degree in painting from the School Of Visual Arts in New York City. Although her family settled in New Jersey, Teriz traveled throughout Egypt. She instantly fell in love with the Zaballeen district (Cairo's community of garbage collectors), when she first visited them in 1998. Inspired by their resourcefulness, spirit and work ethic, she felt compelled to become more involved with the community. Two years later, she began an exterior mural project in the Monastery of St. Simon the Tanner in the Moqattam Hills, the largest of the Zaballeen districts, which would bring her back over three consecutive summers. She launched the Cairo workshop for the Zaballeen children in September 2006. Primarily a painter, she uses photography extensively as part of her painting process. Teriz currently lives in New Jersey with her husband, daughter, and son. |
